Taking Gas to Non Gas Areas

New Radiator

The cost of fuel is one of the three primary factors that influence fuel poverty in Wales. Fuel choice and access to the most cost effective fuel - gas - varies across Wales. Extending the mains gas network in areas where people are most likely to be fuel poor, can give them the chance of lower fuel bills and reducing or ending their fuel poverty.

Warm Wales manages cost effective mains gas extension projects for communities in Wales, using the plan piloted by National Grid's Affordable Warmth Programme on behalf of the Design & Demonstration Unit, Department of Trade & Industry.

Wales was chosen for the first two pilot schemes at Llay in Wrexham and the Mount Estate, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire. About 500 homes in each community had the opportunity to convert to mains gas at a substantially lower price than any previous costing. This made the projects economically viable for the first time. Previous problems on the estates included poor air quality, cold and damp homes, high electricity bills and inefficient storage heaters. Householders now have full central heating systems which they can better afford to run and their homes are warm, comfortable and healthy places to live.

Warm Wales has undertaken mains gas projects in Neath Port Talbot and Wrexham and more will follow. If you would like more information about this service, please contact Helen Wooldridge at Warm Wales 01639 825960.
